John’s tip is for enzyme laundry detergents. Back in the day, Biz was a popular enzyme detergent. One distinction is that you use warm or cold water and pre-soak so the enzymes can eat away the stains. They aren’t as popular as they used to be due to this pre-soak step, but JCD recommends it
