Sumac Seasoning

John Dvorak has a culinary idea for you to consider. Sumac seasoning is a go-to spice to add a special lemon-y flavor, “that’s just delicious!” Dvorak revealed he learned of Sumac from the owner of Ratto’s Deli & Market* in the Old Town area of Oakland, and that it was a secret ingredient in Berkeley’s famed Bongo Burgers. He recommends the Sadaf brand in a shaker jar for adding to your recipes. Dvorak continues to add a teaspoon or so to his burger when he makes burgers. Also great with flank steak! You’ll find a lot of uses for it in your everyday cooking.

  1. I was all about this until finding out I was mildly allergic.

I was putting it on everything too. And it was great while it lasted.

My allergy stems from poison oak. I am extremely sensitive to it. Everything in the same family genus is not good for me: mango, cashew, pistachio and many others. This spice is in there. Gave me a stomach ache which is better than a full breakout, that’s why I’d say it was mild.
