Tip of the Day: Give Your Kids Walkie-Talkies Instead of Smartphone

Adam shared a tip that was given to him by a show producer. When their homeschooled kids went outside to play, they gave them handheld walkie-talkies so they could communicate instead of using expensive smartphones which have distracting screens and often break. These radios use the GMRS or FRS band and are sometimes called handheld or H/T (handheld transceiver in HAM parlance) The less expensive FRS radios (which use a subset of GMRS frequencies) are sometimes nicknamed bubble-pack radios because they are ready to go with little training. Kids can hook them on their belts, look cool and these radios have a great range – about a mile – at least! The batteries last longer too! They’re cheap and made in China. You can get them on Amazon for around $20 for a pair. We found this pair of Baofeng FRS radios for only 15 bucks! We recommend spending a little more but hey, try these out first!
At NoAgendaFun, we’ve been using Baofeng UV-5R HAM radios for years and they’re great bang-for-your-buck radios for emergency and outdoor use.
Shop on Amazon for FRS handheld radios.
