Tip of the Day: Smooth Edge Can Opener
JCD discovered these Smooth Edge can openers in France in the 1970s. They’re sometimes called Smooth Edge or similar names. These reach under the can lid and pull it off! Amazing! It takes a little more work, but unlike ordinary can openers, these have no rough edges, and you can put the lid back on to store the leftovers in the refrigerator.
John C. Dvorak: I’m recommending another product. There’s a bunch of companies that make this product—it’s a lid remover, also known as a smooth-edge can opener.
Adam Curry: Oh, these are actually quite handy to have around the house.
John C. Dvorak: I discovered these in France back in the ‘70s. I bought one during one of my trips, and I still have it—it still works! This is different from a regular can opener, which cracks the top, grinds around, and leaves a sharp edge that can cut you. Lid removers, on the other hand, literally unlatch the entire lid, letting you pull it off cleanly. You can even wash the can and put the lid back on. These things are amazing.
Adam Curry: I don’t have one, but it sounds like something I should get.
John C. Dvorak: You should! These lid removers aren’t like typical can openers that rip the top off. It takes a little practice to get the hang of the angle you need to use, but they’re fantastic. They usually cost around eight or nine bucks, and once you start using them, you’ll wonder where they’ve been all your life.
Adam Curry: So, it’s like a better mousetrap! Do you have a specific brand in mind?
John C. Dvorak: No specific brand—there are about 20 companies making these, and they’re all pretty much the same design. They hook under the lid lip, release it from the can, and you can even put the lid back on.
