I read the unabridged edition many years ago. A real eye-opener, and, yes, it is depressing to read.
Please be aware that this is an abridged edition. Amazon states that this was done with the author’s ‘full co-operation’ whatever that means. (Solzhenitsyn was in his 80’s in 2003.) Even though it is long it is very, very interesting. It gives insights into how things were in Russia during the early to mid 1900’s. (maybe, sill today?)
