Tip of the Day: Reusable Food Storage Bags

Lerine reusable food storage bags

Another tip from Mimi Dvorak! Resuable food storage bags. These are thick ziplock-style reusable food storage bags that are thick and sturdy. Made out of silicone and are dishwasher safe. Preferred brands are IdeaTek or Lerine. According to John Dvorak, they freeze well and don’t get weird when they get frozen. Shop for these bags on Amazon.

John C. Dvorak: This one is actually another Mimi tip, although it’s a tip I asked her to give me because of these products that she uses, these reusable food storage bags. Well, these are pretty cool. They’re not just like a thick plastic bag. They’re made of silicone with no dangerous chemicals. They have a huge Ziploc-style closure. Plus, they’re dishwasher safe and can be used for all sorts of things.

Adam Curry: That’s handy.

John C. Dvorak: Right. I’m reading from her note – Ideatech and Lerine are two of the brands to look for. She mentioned she’s trying a few different brands. The prices are similar, but they’re not exactly cheap, but they’re worth it. The idea is awesome—they’re durable, they never leak, and you can wash them in the dishwasher. They cut down on waste, so if you’re eco-conscious, these are great.

Adam Curry: How long has she been using them?

John C. Dvorak: She said she’s had her first set of Lerine bags for about four months and washed them dozens of times. No difference between new and used. The IdeaTech ones have more rounded corners, so they don’t hold as much, but they’re easier to clean.

Adam Curry: That’s good to know.

John C. Dvorak: Yeah, she also mentioned that they freeze well and don’t change after being frozen. The only thing she wishes they had is a label space because writing on them with a Sharpie is permanent—and you’ll be using these bags for years.

Adam Curry: Tina has these. I’m not sure which brand, though. Personally, I’m more of a Ziploc person. I grew up with them, so I’m loyal to the brand. It’s not great for the environment, but I like being able to just throw them out.

John C. Dvorak: Ok, you’re a wasteful type.

Adam Curry: Yes I like throwing out my bags.

John C. Dvorak: Fair enough. But for those who want to cut down on waste, these silicone bags are definitely a win.
